AFRICAN HISTORY The Seniors 11 – 17 Year olds spent a term led by tutor Sola Adebiyi, being filled with a range of African history topics such as; the Pre-colonial Empires, African Queens, The Slave trades and the struggles for Independence. Debate and poetry helped them engage with the sessions on African issues past and present! They were also enriched by guest such as the investigator ‘Andrew Mohammed and Poet and Writer Tuggstar.
The learning they have gained has been developed into Poetry, dance and drumming pieces that are being performed by KORI in museums, galleries, and schools and as part of the Festival of Youth and Arts Festival 2007. Here are some comments from the young people on their learning: “I really admired the way in which the tutors spent their own time coaching the genius of others and the way they were happy to travel great distances to take us to events. I also like the way the tutor dealt with the range of age without taking anything away from the class.”
“The best thing I learnt was the significance of African People’s in European History. African History is important because knowing your History and the positive influence it had on today helped build my self-confidence. The course helped me feel I had a better sense of self-knowledge.” “The most important thing I learnt is about slavery and the Moors and what the Moors invented and what my family went through. It helps you learn where you come from.” “The best thing I learnt was the whole course. African History is important because it is my background.” “I gained a great deal of knowledge and genuinely enjoyed the experience. Thank you.”
